Vijay Diwas is being observed across India on Monday to mark the country’s definitive victory in the 1971 war that led to the liberation of Bangladesh and reshaped South Asia’s geopolitical landscape. The Indian Army and national leadership paid tribute to the courage, discipline and sacrifice of the Armed Forces, whose operations culminated in Pakistan’s ignominious defeat in the war that saw one of the largest military surrenders in the world history.
Recalling the events of 1971, the Indian Army said that Vijay Diwas symbolises the historic victory achieved through coordinated military action and strong resolve.
The Army highlighted that Indian forces fought alongside the Mukti Bahini, providing decisive support to Bangladesh’s liberation movement.
The Mukti Bahini (Liberation Army) was the organized guerrilla resistance movement that fought for the independence of Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) during the 1971 War.
In a post on X, the Army said, “Vijay Diwas is not just a date – it stands as the symbol of the historic and decisive victory of the Indian Armed Forces in the 1971 War. It was a victory where the Mukti Bahini and the Indian Armed Forces fought shoulder-to-shoulder, together giving the Bangladesh Liberation struggle its decisive thrust toward freedom. A triumph that reshaped India’s military history, redrew the map of South Asia and gave birth to a new nation – Bangladesh.”
“It also brought an end to the brutal atrocities, oppression and cruelty inflicted upon an entire community by the Pakistani Army. In just 13 days, the Indian Armed Forces displayed extraordinary courage, unshakable resolve and exceptional military skill, culminating in the surrender of 93,000 Pakistani soldiers – one of the largest military surrenders in global history,” added the Army.
The victory reaffirmed India’s commitment to justice, its support for friendly nations and its military preparedness.
“This day stands as a testament to India’s loyalty to its friends and a clear message to its adversaries – Then and Now – When India rises for Justice, Victory is Inevitable,” concluded the Army.
Commemorations also underline the shared legacy of 1971, with India and Bangladesh continuing the tradition of joint participation in Victory Day events. War veterans and serving officers from both countries took part in events held in India and Bangladesh, reflecting common sacrifice and remembrance.
According to the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh, eight Bangladeshi war veterans and two serving officers arrived in India to participate in Vijay Diwas events in Kolkata, while a similar Indian delegation visited Dhaka for Bangladesh’s Victory Day celebrations.
President Droupadi Murmu paid tributes to the Armed Forces on Vijay Diwas, recalling their valour, devotion and patriotism. She highlighted the Army’s emphasis on self-reliance and indigenisation, noting that recent operations reflect strategic resolve and preparedness for future challenges.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended greetings, remembering the soldiers whose courage and sacrifice ensured India’s historic victory in 1971. He said their selfless service continues to inspire generations.
