BJP declares Nitin Nabin sole candidate for party president

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday declared Nitin Nabin as the sole candidate for the post of National President after the nomination and scrutiny process concluded without any other contenders, clearing the way for his unopposed election as the party’s 12th national chief.

In an official announcement issued late on Monday, National Returning Officer K. Laxman said that only one name – Nitin Nabin’s – remained in the fray following the completion of nominations and the withdrawal process.

Laxman confirmed that 37 sets of nomination papers were submitted in support of Nabin between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday. All the nominations were found valid after scrutiny. No withdrawals were recorded, and no other candidates filed nominations.

The election process gathered pace after 30 of the BJP’s 36 state presidents were elected, crossing the minimum requirement of 50 per cent mandated under the party Constitution.

The notification for the election schedule was issued on January 16, along with the publication of the electoral roll. The nomination process opened and closed on Monday, followed by scrutiny.

Nabin, 45, who was appointed BJP’s National Working President on December 14, 2025, has received strong backing from the party’s top leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and outgoing BJP President J.P. Nadda.

Senior BJP leaders, Chief Ministers, and representatives from several states submitted nomination papers in his favour earlier in the day, signalling broad organisational consensus.

As the lone candidate, Nabin is set to be formally elected by the electoral college comprising members of the BJP’s national and state councils. The process is in line with party rules, which require a candidate to be proposed by at least 20 electoral college members from a state and to have a minimum of 15 years of party membership.

With no contest in the fray, the BJP is expected to formally announce Nabin’s elevation as National President on Tuesday.
