The government on Tuesday held a meeting with leaders of political parties to discuss issues related to the upcoming Budget Session of Parliament, 2026.
The meeting, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, took place at the Parliament House Complex and was attended by 51 leaders from 39 political parties, including Union Ministers. The meeting was convened by Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju. Union Health and Family Welfare Minister and Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha J.P. Nadda, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan were also present.
At the outset, Singh welcomed the leaders, following which Kiren Rijiju briefed them on the schedule of the Budget Session. He informed that the session will commence on January 28 and, subject to government business, is expected to conclude on April 2. Both Houses will adjourn for recess on February 13 and reassemble on March 9 to allow Standing Committees to examine the Demands for Grants of various ministries and departments. The session will have a total of 30 sittings, spread over 65 days.
Rijiju said the session would primarily focus on financial business related to the Union Budget 2026–27 and the discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address, while essential legislative and other business would be taken up mainly in the second part. He also informed that the Economic Survey will be presented on January 29, followed by the Union Budget on February 1.
Leaders of various political parties shared issues they plan to raise during the session and assured their cooperation for its smooth functioning. Rijiju thanked all participants and said the government remains open to discussing all important issues in accordance with parliamentary rules.
