India to stay at centre of global energy dialogue despite geopolitical flux: Hardeep Puri at IEW 2026

India has demonstrated strong preparedness to navigate sustained geopolitical volatility in global energy markets and will continue to remain at the centre of international energy dialogue, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said at the closing ceremony of India Energy Week (IEW) 2026.

Addressing the closing fireside chat, Puri said India’s energy strategy is anchored in diversification, resilience and forward-looking transitions. He noted that the country has successfully managed successive geopolitical shocks by converting challenges into opportunities through diversification of supply sources and a rapid transition towards cleaner fuels.

Highlighting India’s global standing, the Minister said the country is the world’s third-largest energy consumer, fourth-largest refiner and among the top exporters of petroleum products. He asserted that India would continue to ensure the availability, affordability and sustainability of energy even amid global uncertainty.

Puri also emphasised the government’s push towards compressed biogas (CBG), green hydrogen and indigenous clean energy technologies, alongside sustained investments in conventional fuels. He said that while traditional energy sources would remain essential, expanding initiatives such as ethanol blending, biofuels, hydrogen and CBG are strengthening confidence in greener fuel adoption.

Referring to global price volatility, the Minister said India has successfully shielded consumers from international energy shocks. He noted that global turmoil has not been passed on to consumers and that India currently has among the lowest energy prices globally, with uninterrupted supply maintained even during periods of crisis.

Following the Minister’s address, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Neeraj Mittal, outlined the government’s roadmap to support India’s growth trajectory. He said that with projected economic growth exceeding 7 per cent, energy demand is expected to rise sharply, and the government’s focus is on strengthening domestic exploration and production while positioning India as a reliable global supplier of refined petroleum products.

Mittal highlighted plans to accelerate upstream activity through increased drilling and exploration to enhance self-reliance. He also stressed the integration of refining and petrochemicals to maximise value addition and reduce import dependence.

On energy transition, the Secretary underlined the growing role of technology and digitalisation in improving efficiency and resilience. He said India is on track to meet its compressed biogas targets, including achieving five per cent blending by 2030, supported by state-level participation and farmer-led biomass supply chains.
