Indian Railways utilises over 80 pc of FY26 budgetary support by December

Indian Railways has utilised 80.54 per cent of its allocated Gross Budgetary Support (GBS) outlay for 2025–26 as of the end of December 2025, the Ministry of Railways said in a statement on Monday.

According to the ministry, expenditure stood at Rs 2,03,138 crore out of the total GBS allocation of Rs 2,52,200 crore, marking a 6.54 per cent increase in utilisation compared to the corresponding period last year (December 2024).

The spending has been primarily directed towards safety measures, capacity enhancement, infrastructure modernisation, and passenger amenities.

In safety-related works, 84 per cent of the allocated funds have been utilised. For capacity augmentation, Rs 76,048 crore — around 69 per cent — has been spent out of the Rs 1,09,238 crore allocated. Customer amenities recorded an 80 per cent utilisation, with expenditure amounting to Rs 9,575 crore up to December 2025.

The ministry said Indian Railways is working towards delivering faster, safer, and world-class rail travel at affordable costs by transforming itself into a future-ready organisation aligned with the vision of a modern and well-connected nation.

Highlighting the impact of sustained capital expenditure over the past decade, the ministry pointed to the operation of 164 Vande Bharat train services and 30 Amrit Bharat train services, the rollout of the Kavach automatic train protection system, over 99 per cent electrification of the broad-gauge network, and extensive works on new lines, gauge conversion, track doubling, traffic facilities, investments in public sector units, and metropolitan transport systems.

These initiatives have led to improvements in speed, safety, and passenger comfort while keeping rail travel affordable. With the Vande Bharat Sleeper train set to be inaugurated shortly, Indian Railways is expected to further enhance long-distance rail travel.

The ministry said the current trends indicate that the GBS expenditure plan for 2025–26 remains on track, with infrastructure works progressing at pace and targets for the financial year likely to be fully achieved.
