Authorities in Western Australia issued an emergency warning on Thursday for a life-threatening bushfire burning near Perth Airport.
The WA Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) said residents in the Kalamunda region, about 15 km east of central Perth and 5 km from the airport, should evacuate immediately. The fire, moving north, posed a serious threat to lives and homes.
“Do not wait and see. Leaving at the last minute could put your life in danger,” the DFES warned. People trapped in vehicles were advised to cover themselves with a woollen blanket and lie on the floor in case of intense heat, while those unable to leave were instructed to shelter in a room with running water and a clear exit.
The affected suburbs, including Maida Vale and Forrestfield, have a combined population of around 25,000, according to the 2021 census. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported power outages and road closures in the area, but said Perth Airport remained unaffected.
