Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat on his death anniversary, remembering the Father of the Nation for his enduring ideals of swadeshi and non-violence, which continue to guide India’s journey towards self-reliance and development.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. His timeless ideals continue to guide our nation’s journey. We reaffirm our commitment to his principles and to building an India rooted in justice, harmony and service to humanity.”
In another post, PM Modi highlighted Gandhi’s unwavering emphasis on non-violence. “Revered Bapu always emphasised non-violence for the protection of humanity. There is such power in it that it can change the world without weapons,” he said, quoting Sanskrit verses underscoring ahimsa as the highest duty, truth and moral force.
President Droupadi Murmu also paid floral tributes at Raj Ghat and attended the all-religion prayer meeting (Sarva Dharma Prarthana) and the Martyrs’ Day ceremony at Mahatma Gandhi Smriti Sthal. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and several other senior leaders were present on the occasion.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju were among other leaders who paid homage to Gandhi, recalling his role in uniting the nation and promoting the ideals of truth, non-violence and social harmony.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, remains one of the most revered figures in India’s political history for his unparalleled contribution to the freedom struggle. Through his steadfast commitment to ahimsa and civil disobedience, he mobilised millions and played a decisive role in ending British colonial rule.
Fondly known as Bapu, Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948. His death anniversary is observed annually as Martyrs’ Day, with leaders and citizens across the country paying tribute to his enduring legacy of peace, unity and moral courage.
