National Textiles Ministers’ Conference to begin on January 8 in Guwahati

The National Textiles Ministers’ Conference 2026 will begin on January 8 in Guwahati, Assam, bringing together textile ministers and senior officials from States and Union Territories for two days of discussions on policy, investment and innovation in the sector. The conference is being organised by the Ministry of Textiles in collaboration with the Government of Assam under the theme “India’s Textiles: Weaving Growth, Heritage & Innovation”.

The event aims to deliberate on key areas such as policy reforms, infrastructure development, sustainability, exports and technological advancement, in line with the government’s vision of positioning India as a global textile manufacturing hub by 2030. The focus will be on boosting exports, generating employment and ensuring inclusive growth, aligned with the guiding principle of “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi”.

The inaugural session on January 8 will be attended by Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita, among other dignitaries. The opening session will also feature the launch of an exhibition and pavilion showcasing India’s textile capabilities, innovation and rich heritage.

The conference will include thematic sessions on infrastructure and investment, expanding textile exports, raw materials and fibres, technical and new-age textiles, and the preservation and promotion of handlooms and handicrafts. Flagship initiatives such as the PM Mega Integrated Textile Regions and Apparel (PM MITRA) Parks, sustainability and environmental compliance, innovation and integrated value-chain development will be key areas of focus.

A special conclave on strengthening and empowering the textile sector in the North-Eastern region will also be held on January 8. The conclave will focus on unlocking the region’s potential in silk, handloom, handicrafts and bamboo-based textiles, with emphasis on Eri, Muga and Mulberry silk, women-led enterprises, branding and market access.

The National Textiles Ministers’ Conference is expected to strengthen Centre–State coordination and help chart a roadmap for a competitive, sustainable and inclusive textile sector in the coming years.
