NHAI discontinues KYV requirement for new car FASTags from February 1

The National Highways Authority of India has announced a major public relief measure by discontinuing the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for cars under the Car/Jeep/Van category for all new FASTag issuances from February 1.

The decision aims to enhance public convenience and eliminate post-activation issues faced by highway users, who were required to complete KYV procedures even after FASTag issuance despite having valid vehicle documents.

According to NHAI, the move will benefit a large number of private vehicle owners by reducing delays and follow-up requirements after FASTag activation.

For existing FASTags issued to cars, KYV will no longer be mandatory as a routine requirement. The process will be triggered only in specific cases where complaints are received, including issues related to loose FASTags, incorrect issuance or suspected misuse. In the absence of any such complaint, no KYV will be required for existing car FASTags.

To maintain system integrity while simplifying the process for users, NHAI has simultaneously strengthened pre-activation verification norms for issuer banks.

Under the revised framework, FASTag activation will be permitted only after mandatory validation of vehicle details through the VAHAN database. The earlier provision allowing post-activation validation has been discontinued.

In cases where vehicle details are not available on VAHAN, issuer banks will be required to validate information using the vehicle’s Registration Certificate before activation, with full accountability placed on the issuing bank.

NHAI has clarified that FASTags sold through online channels will also be activated only after complete vehicle validation by banks.

The authority said these reforms will ensure that all verification is completed upfront, removing the need for repeated follow-ups with customers after FASTag activation.

NHAI stated that the measures reflect its continued focus on making the FASTag ecosystem more citizen-friendly, transparent and technology-driven, while strengthening compliance and reducing user grievances.
