PM Modi pays tribute to Balasaheb Thackeray birth centenary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to Balasaheb Thackeray on his birth centenary, calling him a “towering figure” who profoundly shaped Maharashtra’s socio-political landscape.

In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister said Thackeray was known for his sharp intellect, powerful oratory and uncompromising convictions, noting that he commanded a unique connect with the people.

PM Modi highlighted that beyond politics, Thackeray had a deep interest in culture, literature and journalism. Recalling Thackeray’s early career as a cartoonist, he said it reflected a keen observation of society and a fearless commentary on contemporary issues.

The Prime Minister added that he draws great inspiration from Thackeray’s vision for Maharashtra’s development and affirmed that efforts would continue to fulfil that vision.

Balasaheb Thackeray, born on January 23, 1926, in Pune, was an Indian journalist, cartoonist and politician. He founded the Shiv Sena, which went on to become a dominant regional force in Maharashtra’s politics. Thackeray passed away on November 17, 2012, in Mumbai.
