The Padma Awards for 2026 were announced on Saturday, with President Droupadi Murmu approving the conferment of 131 civilian honours, including two duo cases, on the eve of Republic Day.
The Padma Awards, among the highest civilian honours in the country, are conferred in three categories — Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. They recognise distinguished service across a wide range of fields, including art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports and civil service.
The Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, the Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of a high order, and the Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced annually on Republic Day and are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, usually in March or April.
For 2026, the list comprises five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri awards. Nineteen of the awardees are women. The list also includes six recipients from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI and 16 posthumous honours. In duo cases, the award is counted as one.
