President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday addressed the convocation ceremony of Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar, calling upon students to view education not merely as a means of livelihood, but as a powerful instrument for serving society and the nation.
Addressing graduating students, the President said that as they move into diverse paths – whether in government or private service, higher education and research, entrepreneurship, or teaching – certain values remain essential across all professions. She highlighted lifelong learning, integrity and honesty, adaptability to change, resilience in the face of failure, teamwork, disciplined use of time and resources, and a commitment to using knowledge for the greater public good. These qualities, she said, would help students become not only successful professionals but also responsible citizens.
President Murmu reminded students that society plays a crucial role in shaping their educational journeys and that graduates carry a responsibility to give back. She said efforts to uplift those left behind in the development process could be a meaningful way of repaying this social debt.
Highlighting India’s progress over the past decade, the President noted significant advances in technology and a growing culture of entrepreneurship, with opportunities ranging from agriculture and artificial intelligence to defence and space. She said higher education institutions could further accelerate this momentum by strengthening research, fostering industry-academia collaboration, and promoting innovations that address social needs.
Expressing concern over the growing challenge of drug abuse in Punjab, particularly among the youth, President Murmu described it as a serious threat to the health and social fabric of society. She underscored the pivotal role of educational institutions like Guru Nanak Dev University in guiding young people towards positive and constructive paths.
The President said the coming two decades would be critical for achieving the goal of a developed India, stressing that the country’s future rests with young citizens who possess scientific temper, act responsibly, and serve selflessly. She urged universities to nurture these values and encouraged students to ensure that their professional choices strengthen the nation and uphold human values.
President Murmu also recalled that Guru Nanak Dev University was established during the 500th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, noting that his teachings form the guiding principles of the institution. She said his ideals are a shared heritage that offer solutions to many contemporary social challenges.
Referring to Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s emphasis on equality, the President welcomed the university’s efforts towards women’s empowerment. She expressed satisfaction at the strong representation of women among degree and medal recipients at the convocation, and said empowering women with confidence and opportunity is vital for the progress of both society and the nation.
