President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday launched the #SkilltheNation AI Challenge and virtually inaugurated IGNOU Regional Centre and Skill Centre in Odisha’s Rairangpur, underscoring the government’s focus on preparing India’s workforce for an artificial intelligence-driven future.
The initiatives were unveiled at a function held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre, organised by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
Addressing the gathering, the President said artificial intelligence is reshaping economies and societies across the world by transforming learning, work, service delivery and problem-solving. She described AI as a major opportunity for India, particularly given the country’s young population, and stressed that it should be used as a force for positive change.
President Murmu said India’s approach to technology has always been centred on empowerment and inclusion, adding that AI should help bridge social, economic and technological divides. She emphasised the need to ensure that the benefits of emerging technologies reach people from all sections of society, especially marginalised communities.
The President welcomed efforts by students to equip themselves with future-ready skills and urged them to use their knowledge and technological capabilities to serve society and address real-world challenges. She also appreciated Members of Parliament who have completed AI learning modules, noting that their participation reflects leadership through continuous learning.
Highlighting AI’s growing role in the economy, President Murmu said the technology is expected to contribute significantly to India’s GDP, employment and productivity in the coming decade. She pointed out that skills such as data science, AI engineering and data analytics will be critical in building a strong domestic talent base.
She added that the government, working with educational institutions, industry and academia, is focused not only on adopting advanced technologies but also on shaping their responsible use. Calling for collective effort, the President said these initiatives align with the National Education Policy and the broader goal of making India a knowledge-driven, inclusive and technologically advanced nation.
