The Central government has notified the commencement of select provisions of the National Sports Governance Act, 2025, which come into effect today. The law will govern the functioning of national sports federations and other recognised sports bodies across the country.
The provisions notified today cover the establishment and governance framework of the National Olympic Committee, National Paralympic Committee, National Sports Federations, and Regional Sports Federations. They also include compliance requirements for recognised sports organisations, the constitution of the National Sports Board and the National Sports Tribunal, and the rule-making powers of the Central Government.
The phased implementation aims to ensure a smooth transition to a statutory sports governance framework, promoting transparency, accountability, ethical practices, and good governance in line with international best practices and the Olympic and Paralympic charters.
With the notification, the institutional mechanisms envisaged under the Act are now operational, marking a key step towards reforming sports administration in India.
