Asian Games gold medallist Amit Panghal and heavyweight Sagar advanced at the Elite Men’s and Women’s National Boxing Championships on Sunday as the tournament marked the first time the men’s and women’s events were staged together at a single venue.
Panghal, representing the Services Sports Control Board, dominated Bihar’s Usman Mohd Sultan to win by unanimous decision in the bantamweight category, while Haryana’s Sagar was pushed hard by Kerala’s Edwin before prevailing on a split decision in the heavyweight division.
Around 600 boxers from across the country are competing at Gautam Buddha University in Greater Noida, with 10 weight categories each for men and women.
Lalrambuat of Mizoram also progressed in the bantamweight class, defeating Odisha’s Santosh Kumar by unanimous decision.
