Vice President Radhakrishnan launches book on leadership lessons from Srila Prabhupada

Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Wednesday launched the book “Sing, Dance and Lead: Leadership Lessons from the Life of Srila Prabhupada” by author Hindol Sengupta at a function held at the Vice-President’s Enclave in New Delhi. The book draws leadership insights from the life and teachings of A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).

Addressing the gathering, the Vice-President said India’s civilisational heritage has long emphasised leadership rooted in values, service and inner discipline. He described Swami Prabhupada as a powerful example of this tradition, noting that his life reflected leadership founded on purpose, humility and moral clarity rather than authority or power.

Observing that Swami Prabhupada’s ideas are especially relevant in today’s rapidly changing world, Radhakrishnan said the institutions he established continue to serve humanity decades after his passing. He remarked that the true measure of Prabhupada’s leadership lay in the enduring impact of his work, which has touched millions globally, even among those who may not be familiar with his name.

Recalling Swami Prabhupada’s extraordinary journey at an advanced age across continents, the Vice-President noted that he carried not just a religious philosophy but a disciplined and joyful way of life. Referring to the founding of ISKCON in 1966, he said its global reach and influence demonstrated leadership driven by conviction, service and a clear vision.

Highlighting the theme of the book, Radhakrishnan said Sing, Dance and Lead presents the idea that leadership can be participative, joyful and deeply human. He added that Swami Prabhupada led by inspiration rather than command, building enduring institutions while remaining anchored in simplicity and devotion.

Drawing from the teachings of saint-poet Thiruvalluvar, the Vice-President underlined that leadership begins with clarity of thought and an elevated inner vision, which must translate into collective action. He said the book effectively presents Swami Prabhupada’s life as a case study in ethical and transformational leadership, linking history, philosophy and contemporary leadership thought.

Noting the relevance of such works for those in public life, Radhakrishnan said democratic institutions depend on trust, restraint and a spirit of service. He expressed hope that the book would inspire young readers to look beyond material success and view leadership as a means to uplift others and contribute to the larger good.

The event was attended by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat; Founder and Chairman of The Akshaya Patra Foundation and President of ISKCON Bangalore, Madhu Pandit Das; Vice Chairman and Co-Founder of The Akshaya Patra Foundation and Senior Vice-President of ISKCON Bangalore, Chanchalapati Das; along with senior officials, scholars and other invited guests.
