Education is for life, not just exams: PM Modi tells students at Pariksha Pe Charcha

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday interacted with students during the ninth edition of Pariksha Pe Charcha (PPC), urging them to trust their own learning patterns, focus on holistic development, and view education as a lifelong process rather than an exam-centric exercise.

The interaction, held at the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi, saw students from across the country share concerns related to studies, stress, skills, confidence, technology and future aspirations. Addressing confusion caused by conflicting advice from parents and teachers, PM Modi said everyone has a unique learning rhythm and students should adopt changes only when they feel the need. “Listen to everyone’s advice, but change your pattern only when you want to,” he said, stressing that improvement must come from personal experience.

Responding to a question on keeping pace with classroom teaching, the Prime Minister said goals should be “within reach but not easily achievable.” He advised teachers to stay just a step ahead of students and inform them in advance about upcoming lessons to build curiosity and deepen understanding. “Plough the mind, then connect the mind, and then place the subjects of study. You will always find students successful,” he said.

On the debate between marks and skills, PM Modi emphasised balance, noting that education and skill development go hand in hand. He said books impart knowledge, but professional skills are developed only through practice and real-life application. Education, he added, is meant for life, not merely for examinations. “Exams are meant to examine oneself,” he said, cautioning against an excessive focus on repeated question patterns and marks.

The Prime Minister also addressed stress and memory issues, linking learning outcomes to involvement. He said the more engaged students are in a moment, the longer they remember it. Encouraging collaborative learning, he said teaching peers and seeking help from others improves understanding for everyone. He advised students to revise regularly, manage time through simple planning habits, and avoid dwelling on the past.

During the interaction, students presented songs, poems and musical performances. PM Modi welcomed participants with Assam’s gamosa, describing it as a symbol of women’s empowerment in the Northeast.

On balancing studies with hobbies and rest, the Prime Minister said turning interests into practical products and sharing them for feedback helps spark innovation and success. Addressing queries on gaming, he said gaming can be a skill if pursued constructively, but warned against gambling. He encouraged students to use creativity to develop meaningful content rooted in India’s cultural heritage.

Speaking on dreams and confidence, the PM said not having a dream is a mistake, but dreams must be supported by action. He urged students to read biographies, stay true to themselves, step out of comfort zones and draw confidence from inner truth rather than comparisons. “Aspire not to be, but to do,” he said.

Highlighting the role of technology, the Prime Minister described technology and artificial intelligence as powerful tools that enhance human capabilities when used wisely. He advised students to harness AI to build wisdom and skills, not merely for shortcuts or entertainment.

Calling cleanliness a collective duty, the Prime Minister said responsible behaviour, discipline and civic sense are essential for national progress. He reminded students that they would be at the centre of India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047 and encouraged them to commit personally to that goal.

The next episode of Pariksha Pe Charcha 2026 will be aired on February 9 at 10 am.
