Government to make suo motu statement on India–US trade deal: JP Nadda

Union Minister JP Nadda on Tuesday announced in the Rajya Sabha that the government would make a suo motu statement on the India–US trade deal in the House and was also ready to hold a discussion.

“Late last night, the US President tweeted on tariffs and referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a true friend. After this, the Prime Minister tweeted, thanking the US President and commenting on trade. The government will issue a suo motu statement on this trade deal and also hold a discussion on it”, Nadda said.

Amid sloganeering by Opposition members over the deal, Nadda criticised the Congress and the INDI alliance, saying, “When the government is ready to give a detailed statement, this attitude of the Congress and the INDI alliance is wrong. Their approach is threatening to democracy. This is Congress’s irresponsible behaviour. It is their frustration that is speaking.”

India and the United States reached a trade agreement late on Monday that cut tariffs on Indian exports to 18 per cent, down from 50 per cent, which included 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs and an additional 25 per cent imposed over India’s continued purchases of Russian oil.
