Over 26 lakh households get rooftop solar under PM Surya Ghar; ₹14,771 crore aid released

More than 26 lakh households across India have so far benefited from the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY), the government said on Tuesday, with rooftop solar installations rapidly expanding under the flagship renewable energy initiative.

According to data shared in Parliament by Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik, since the scheme’s launch in February 2024, 20,85,514 rooftop solar (RTS) systems have been installed nationwide. These systems have provided solar power access to 26,14,446 households, backed by Rs 14,771.82 crore in Central Financial Assistance (CFA) disbursed up to December 2025.

Under the scheme, eligible residential electricity consumers with grid-connected power connections can apply through the scheme’s national portal to install solar panels on their rooftops. The support aims to make solar energy affordable and expand clean energy use at the household level.

The government estimates that if rooftop solar systems are installed in one crore households, they could generate up to 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity over the systems’ estimated 25-year lifespan. This would cut about 720 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, underscoring the environmental benefits of the programme.

States and Union Territories have seen varying levels of adoption under the scheme. Gujarat leads the country with over 5.15 lakh installations benefiting more than 7.41 lakh households, followed by Maharashtra with nearly 3.92 lakh systems installed and Uttar Pradesh with over 3.26 lakh systems. Other states from Kerala to Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh to Assam have also recorded significant installation figures.

The detailed state-wise progress table submitted in the Rajya Sabha shows widespread participation from regions across the country, reflecting growing household interest in clean energy solutions.
