Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo on Wednesday reaffirmed their commitment to advancing responsible, talent-driven artificial intelligence during a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit 2026.
The Finnish leader, who arrived in India to attend the five-day summit, met PM Modi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in sustainability, digitalisation, AI research and ethical innovation, while also exploring how Indian talent can further strengthen bilateral collaboration.
In a post on X, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the two leaders deliberated on cooperation in sustainability and digitalisation, AI research and ethical innovation, and ways to deepen collaboration through talent exchange.
PM Modi commended Finland’s emergence as an innovation-driven player in AI and both leaders reiterated their shared commitment to harnessing technology-enabled solutions for a sustainable future.
The India AI Impact Summit 2026, currently underway at Bharat Mandapam, has drawn participation from over 110 countries and 30 international organisations. Around 20 Heads of State or Government and nearly 45 ministers are attending the event, making it one of the largest global gatherings on artificial intelligence.
The summit is the fourth in the series, following earlier editions at Bletchley Park in 2023, in South Korea in 2024, and in France in 2025. It marks the first time the global AI summit is being hosted in the Global South.
The event aims to align AI initiatives with India’s national vision of “Sarvajana Hitaya, Sarvajana Sukhaya” (welfare for all, happiness for all) and the broader global principle of AI for Humanity. Guided by three foundational pillars – People, Planet and Progress – the summit seeks to promote human-centric AI, environmentally sustainable technological advancement and inclusive economic growth.
Apart from the meeting with the Finnish Prime Minister, PM Modi also held talks with Spanish President Pedro Sánchez. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, their discussions covered trade and economy, digital innovation, healthcare, climate action and education. PM Modi also conveyed appreciation for Spain’s consistent support for strong India–EU relations.
The Prime Minister also received Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, as part of engagements with global technology leaders attending the summit.
Several other dignitaries arrived in New Delhi for the event, including Seychelles Vice President Sebastien Pillay, Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, and Sweden’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch.
