Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday held bilateral talks with Spanish President Pedro Sanchez at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, focusing on expanding cooperation across trade, economy, digital technology, innovation, health, climate action and education.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit 2026, currently underway at Bharat Mandapam.
President Sánchez arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday to participate in the summit and was received at the airport by Minister of State for Skills Development and Entrepreneurship Jayant Singh.
Following the meeting, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the two leaders discussed a wide range of issues aimed at deepening the India–Spain partnership.
Key areas of discussion included trade and economic cooperation, digital transformation, innovation, healthcare, climate action and education. PM Modi also conveyed appreciation for Spain’s consistent support for strong India–European Union relations.
Ahead of his meeting with the Prime Minister, President Sanchez addressed the Spain–India CEO Forum, where he highlighted Spain’s investment potential and sought to strengthen business ties with Indian industry leaders.
In a post on X, the Spanish leader described Spain as a strategic partner offering growth, stability, talent and innovation.
India and Spain established diplomatic relations in 1956, and bilateral ties have steadily expanded across political, economic and cultural domains. President Sánchez had earlier paid an official visit to India in October 2024 – his first visit to the country and the first by a Spanish head of government in 18 years.
PM Modi had visited Spain in May 2017. The two leaders have also met on the sidelines of G20 Summits in 2018 and 2021 and held a telephone conversation in February 2023, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
The current visit is taking place during the ongoing India-Spain Dual Year of Culture, Tourism and AI, adding further momentum to cooperation across multiple sectors.
The India AI Impact Summit 2026, the first global AI summit hosted in the Global South, has drawn participation from over 110 countries and 30 international organisations, including around 20 heads of state or government and nearly 45 ministers.
