Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a semiconductor facility in Gujarat on February 28, marking a significant step in India’s semiconductor manufacturing journey.
At around 3:45 PM, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the Semiconductor Assembly, Test and Packaging (ATMP) facility of Micron Technology’s Indian arm in Sanand. He will also address a gathering on the occasion.
The inauguration signals the commencement of commercial production and shipment of the first Made-in-India semiconductor memory modules from the Sanand facility. The development is seen as a milestone in strengthening India’s integration into the global semiconductor value chain.
The project was the first proposal approved under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). With a total investment of over ₹22,500 crore, the facility’s groundwork was laid in September 2023, and construction began soon after approval, reflecting the government’s push to fast-track strategic semiconductor investments.
Once fully operational, the Sanand ATMP facility will house approximately 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, making it one of the world’s largest raised-floor cleanrooms. The plant is designed to cater to global customers and meet the rising demand for memory and storage solutions, particularly driven by advancements in artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.
The facility will process advanced Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) and NAND wafers sourced from Micron’s global manufacturing network into finished memory and storage products for markets worldwide.
The operationalisation of the Sanand plant underscores India’s growing profile as a competitive and trusted destination for semiconductor manufacturing, aligning with the government’s broader vision of building a resilient and self-reliant technology ecosystem.
