Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that the Union Budget 2026-27 lays a strong foundation for India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047, describing it as ambitious, future-ready and reflective of the aspirations of the people.
In a video message following the presentation of the Budget in Parliament, the Prime Minister said the Budget would give “new energy and new momentum” to India’s ongoing reform process, calling it a key milestone in accelerating economic growth while ensuring inclusion and stability.
Highlighting that Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has presented the Budget for the ninth consecutive time, the Prime Minister termed the occasion historic and noted that it symbolises the empowered role of women in nation-building. He described the Budget as a “highway of opportunities” that fulfils present needs while strengthening the foundation of India’s future.
PM Modi said the Budget reflects trust-based governance and a human-centric economic framework. He underlined that it strikes a careful balance by reducing the fiscal deficit and controlling inflation, even as it sustains high capital expenditure and high growth.
He added that the reforms introduced through the Budget would further energise India’s “Reform Express”, providing the country’s youth with opportunities to innovate, create and excel.
Emphasising India’s growing global stature, the Prime Minister said the country is not content with being the fastest-growing major economy and is firmly resolved to become the world’s third-largest economy. He said this determination reflects the collective will of 140 crore Indians.
The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s expanding role as a trusted democratic partner and reliable global supplier, noting that recent trade agreements and policy measures are aimed at maximising benefits for youth and small and medium enterprises.
PM Modi said the Budget presents an ambitious roadmap to accelerate the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. He pointed to unprecedented support for sunrise sectors, including the BioPharma Shakti Mission, India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme, development of Rare Earth Corridors, strengthening of the critical minerals sector, new textile schemes, promotion of high-tech tool manufacturing, and the creation of champion MSMEs.
He noted that enhanced support for MSMEs, including small and cottage industries, would enable them to grow from local markets to global platforms.
The Prime Minister highlighted major infrastructure initiatives announced in the Budget, including new dedicated freight corridors, expansion of national waterways, development of high-speed rail corridors, and focused development of tier-2 and tier-3 cities. He also welcomed the push for municipal bonds to strengthen urban finances, saying these measures would accelerate India’s progress towards becoming a developed nation.
Calling citizens the greatest capital of any nation, the Prime Minister said the Budget prioritises investment in human capability through skill development, scale and sustainability. Describing the Budget as a “Yuva Shakti Budget”, he said its provisions would nurture leaders, innovators and creators across sectors.
He highlighted opportunities for youth arising from the establishment of medical hubs, promotion of allied health professionals, growth of the orange economy including audio-visual and gaming sectors, tourism expansion, and the Khelo India Mission. He also pointed to a major tax concession aimed at positioning India as a global data centre hub, which is expected to generate employment.
PM Modi said the Budget prioritises a modern ecosystem for women-led and women-run self-help groups, benefiting over 10 crore women and ensuring prosperity reaches every household. He welcomed the proposal to establish girls’ hostels in every district to improve access to education.
Reiterating the government’s focus on agriculture, dairy and fisheries, he said the Budget includes targeted measures for farmers involved in coconut, cashew, cocoa and sandalwood production. He said the Bharat Vistaar AI tool would empower farmers by providing customised information in local languages, while promoting entrepreneurship in fisheries and animal husbandry would create employment in rural areas.
Concluding his remarks, the Prime Minister said the Union Budget 2026–27 is ambitious and addresses the aspirations of the nation. He congratulated FM Sitharaman and her team for presenting a futuristic and sensitive Budget dedicated to the welfare of villages, the poor and farmers.
