PM Modi highlights India’s evolving energy sector, calls it key to ‘Viksit Bharat’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday shared and praised an article by Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, highlighting India’s transformation into a robust and sustainable energy ecosystem.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal reflects on how India is powering a robust energy ecosystem and shaping a sustainable atmosphere for the future needs as well! Read this piece to get an exact idea of India’s energy policies that promise a Viksit Bharat.”

Power sector transformation over a decade

In his article, Khattar described India’s energy journey as a shift from chronic power shortages to one of the world’s fastest-growing electricity markets.

He noted that energy shortages have sharply declined from 4.2% in 2013-14 to just 0.03% in 2025-26, while total electricity generation has nearly doubled from 1,020 billion units in 2014 to 1,830 billion units in 2025.

India is now the third-largest producer and consumer of electricity globally, with per capita consumption rising significantly, reflecting improved access and economic growth.

Record capacity and grid resilience

The country added a record 52.53 GW of power capacity in 2025-26, the highest ever in a single year. India’s installed capacity now exceeds 520 GW, supported by a highly integrated national grid.

Khattar highlighted the success of the “One Nation, One Grid, One Frequency” system, which enabled the country to manage peak demand of up to 250 GW without major disruptions.

Expanding access and digital reforms

Flagship schemes such as Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana and Saubhagya have ensured near-universal electrification across villages and households.

Under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), the government is rolling out smart prepaid meters, improving efficiency and reducing losses. Aggregate technical and commercial losses have fallen significantly, while under-recovery per unit has sharply declined.

Focus on clean and future-ready energy

The article also emphasised India’s push towards clean and sustainable energy, including expansion of renewable capacity, development of energy storage systems, and the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Khattar outlined ambitious goals such as achieving 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047, supported by new policy frameworks like the SHANTI Act.

With the rise of digital infrastructure, including data centres, energy demand is expected to surge, making sustainable and reliable power supply critical.

Bharat Electricity Summit 2026

The minister invited stakeholders to participate in the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026, scheduled from March 19 to 22 in New Delhi.

The summit will serve as a platform for policy dialogue, investment mobilisation and global collaboration, focusing on clean energy, grid modernisation and technological innovation.

Khattar said India must continue to strengthen coordination, invest in next-generation infrastructure, and expand global energy partnerships to achieve its long-term goals.
