PM Modi invites people to visit Madhavpur Mela in Gujarat’s Porbandar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended greetings on the occasion of the Madhavpur Mela being held in Gujarat’s Porbandar, describing it as a vibrant celebration of India’s cultural diversity and unity.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “My best wishes for the ongoing Madhavpur Mela taking place in Porbandar, Gujarat. This vibrant celebration highlights our glorious culture and at the same time it reinforces the timeless cultural bond between Gujarat and the Northeast. This festival brings together diverse traditions, reflecting the true spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.’ I call upon people to visit this Mela!”

Festival Celebrates East-West Cultural Bond

The Madhavpur Mela, which began on Ram Navami, commemorates the marriage of Lord Krishna and Rukmini. According to folklore, Rukmini, believed to be from the Northeast, was married to Lord Krishna at Madhavpur in Gujarat.

The annual fair symbolises the deep cultural connection between India’s eastern and western regions and is celebrated with traditional rituals, cultural performances, and a ceremonial procession.

Cultural Showcase and National Integration

Organised by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Gujarat government, the festival features folk dances, music, handicrafts, and participation from artists across Northeastern states.

A colourful chariot procession carrying the idol of Lord Krishna is a key highlight of the five-day celebration, which attracts large numbers of visitors and devotees.

PM Modi Recalls Earlier ‘Mann Ki Baat’ Mention

PM Modi also shared a clip from his Mann Ki Baat address of April 2022, where he had highlighted the historical and cultural significance of the Madhavpur Mela.

He had then described the festival as a unique example of India’s unity in diversity, noting how traditions from different regions come together to celebrate a shared heritage.
