PM Modi pays tribute to Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev on Shaheed Diwas

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid heartfelt tributes to iconic freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar on the occasion of Shaheed Diwas, commemorating their martyrdom and enduring legacy in India’s freedom struggle.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Today, we bow in reverence to the brave sons of Bharat Mata, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. Their martyrdom for the nation remains etched in our collective memory. At a young age, they displayed extraordinary courage and an unshakable commitment to the cause of India’s freedom.”

“Undeterred by the might of colonial rule, they chose the path of sacrifice with conviction, placing the nation above their own lives. Their ideals of justice, patriotism and fearless resistance continue to ignite the spirit of countless Indians,” he added.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to the freedom fighters on Shaheed Diwas.

In a post on X, HM Shah said that Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru were icons of the Indian freedom movement who, through their thoughts and actions, inspired the youth to strive for the liberation of their motherland. He said that recalling the heroic sagas of these bravehearts – who willingly embraced the gallows for the sake of their motherland’s freedom – fills one’s heart with a profound sense of patriotism.

Meanwhile, Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan addressed the House, recalling the supreme sacrifice made by the three revolutionaries, who were executed in 1931 at a young age. He described their courage, determination, and spirit of sacrifice as a “shining chapter” in India’s freedom struggle that continues to inspire generations.

Emphasising the historical significance of their martyrdom, the Chairman said it was not merely an episode in the independence movement but a defining moment that awakened the nation’s conscience and united people against colonial rule. He noted that the freedom enjoyed by the country today is the result of sacrifices made by countless patriots, with Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev holding a special place in the hearts of Indians.

Calling upon members to honour their legacy, he urged the House to reaffirm its commitment to constitutional values and democratic principles, and to work collectively towards building a strong, inclusive, and progressive nation.

Members of the House then stood in silence as a mark of respect to the immortal memory of the three martyrs.

Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were members of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association and played a pivotal role in revolutionary activities against the British rule.

On March 23, 1931, they were executed by British authorities in Lahore Jail, an event that galvanized the Indian freedom movement and cemented their status as enduring symbols of sacrifice and patriotism.
