PM Modi shares article on India’s energy transition, highlights push for self-reliance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday shared an article authored by Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik, outlining India’s transformative journey in the energy sector and its growing role in the global clean energy landscape.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Union MoS Shripad Y. Naik highlights that India’s energy transition is being driven by pragmatic policy and a clear push towards Aatmanirbharta. With a strong focus on electrification, clean energy and manufacturing, India is shaping a decisive chapter in the global energy landscape. Do read!”

Naik’s article notes that India has made significant progress in expanding its power capacity over the past decade. The country’s installed generation capacity has more than doubled since 2014, with the share of non-fossil fuel-based energy crossing 51 per cent by October 2025. This achievement enabled India to meet its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target of 50 per cent non-fossil capacity nearly five years ahead of schedule.

Highlighting the pace of expansion, the Minister highlights that a record 47.3 GW of non-fossil capacity was added in the financial year 2025–26. Solar energy, in particular, has seen rapid growth, rising from 2.8 GW in 2014 to over 143 GW by early 2026.

Naik underscores the importance of reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports amid global geopolitical uncertainties. It outlines efforts to promote electrification across sectors, including mobility and industry, with a target of achieving 30 per cent electric vehicle penetration by 2030. These initiatives are expected to significantly reduce oil imports and enhance energy security.

A major focus area highlighted is domestic manufacturing. Under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) framework, India has developed substantial solar module manufacturing capacity, alongside growing indigenous solar cell production.

Naik also points to key government initiatives aimed at expanding clean energy access and promoting sustainability. Schemes such as rooftop solar programmes and solar pump initiatives for farmers have contributed to both energy generation and rural development. Additionally, the National Green Hydrogen Mission is expected to position India as a global leader in green hydrogen production, with a target of 5 million metric tonnes by 2030.

Looking ahead, the focus is shifting from capacity addition to strengthening grid infrastructure, improving market mechanisms and enhancing system efficiency. Reforms such as dynamic power pricing and innovative instruments like Virtual Power Purchase Agreements are expected to boost private investment and optimise energy distribution.

Naik also highlights the importance of global collaboration in advancing clean energy goals. Platforms like the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026 are expected to bring together policymakers, industry leaders and international stakeholders to further accelerate India’s energy transition.
