West Asian tensions rise as Israel expands operations in Lebanon, and missile exchanges grow more intense.

Tensions across West Asia sharply increased on March 16, with Israel confirming an expansion of its ground operations in southern Lebanon while missile exchanges with Hezbollah continued. Israel’s defence minister, Israel Katz, said forces had advanced westward toward the Litani River to dismantle infrastructure linked to Hezbollah. Israeli officials stated that they would not permit the return of displaced residents from southern Lebanon until they ensured the security of northern Israel.

The humanitarian situation in Lebanon is deteriorating on the ground. Local sources report that Israeli forces have surrounded the town of Khiyam as fighting escalates. Aid agencies estimate that over 8.5 lakh people have been displaced so far. The United Kingdom has announced an additional £5 million in emergency aid to help civilians affected by the conflict with food and shelter.

In Iran, officials signalled continued defiance. The foreign ministry stated that Tehran is not seeking a ceasefire and will continue its response following Israeli strikes. Iranian forces reportedly launched multiple missile salvos toward central Israel during the day, while air defence systems remained active around Tehran amid fears of further attacks.

At the diplomatic level, European governments have resisted Donald Trump’s calls to deploy naval forces to secure shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said the strait remains open to global trade but closed to vessels from the United States, Israel, and their allies. Meanwhile, countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, along with the United Kingdom, issued a joint statement condemning attacks on civilian infrastructure.

Elsewhere in the region, Saudi Arabia said it intercepted several drones over its Eastern Province. In the United Arab Emirates, a drone struck a building in Umm Al Quwain, causing a fire without reported injuries. In a separate incident in Abu Dhabi, authorities confirmed that a missile hit a civilian vehicle in the Al Bahyah area, killing one Palestinian national.

Authorities in the UAE also reported that air defence systems intercepted six ballistic missiles and 21 drones launched from Iran. The incidents occur as the country continues to handle disruptions following a drone strike near Dubai International Airport, which ignited a fire close to airport facilities.

The UAE remains on high alert while maintaining what officials described as a restrained and measured response. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the UAE is collaborating with international partners and increasing security around key infrastructure, including the Port of Fujairah, where a fire was reported after a drone strike.

Amid rising tensions, Antonio Tajani commended the UAE’s approach and called for dialogue to prevent further escalation across West Asia. Meanwhile, Iran told the United Nations that it would not submit to what it called unlawful aggression, warning that continued strikes pose serious risks to its civilian population.

The developments highlight a deepening conflict with growing humanitarian and geopolitical impacts, even as global powers advocate restraint and diplomacy.
