Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday highlighted India’s record-breaking progress in renewable energy, sharing an article that underscored the country’s highest-ever annual solar capacity addition.
The achievement was detailed by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, who said India added around 45 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity during the financial year 2025–26, marking a historic milestone in the sector.
Calling it a significant step forward, the Prime Minister said on X that the development reflects India’s growing leadership in clean energy and its commitment to sustainability.
Strong Growth Driven by Key States
Joshi said that states such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra played a leading role in driving the surge in solar capacity addition during the year.
In March 2026 alone, India installed 6.65 GW of solar capacity – the highest-ever in a single month. The top contributors during the month included Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu, further accelerating the country’s transition towards renewable energy.
Push Towards Energy Security and Sustainability
The Union Minister said the milestone reflects India’s unwavering commitment to energy security, sustainable development, and the broader vision of building a “Viksit Bharat.” He emphasized that the rapid expansion of solar capacity is helping the country move towards a cleaner, greener, and more self-reliant energy future.
SECI Dividend Contribution
In a related development, the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited handed over a dividend cheque of ₹115 crore to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, signalling the financial strength and growth of India’s renewable energy sector.
The latest figures reinforce India’s position as one of the fastest-growing renewable energy markets globally, with solar power continuing to play a central role in meeting rising energy demand while reducing carbon emissions.
