India, Japan hold first AI Strategic Dialogue in Mumbai to boost tech cooperation

India and Japan on Tuesday held their inaugural Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategic Dialogue in Mumbai, marking a significant step toward strengthening bilateral cooperation in emerging technologies and digital innovation.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that the dialogue was co-chaired by Amit A. Shukla, MEA Joint Secretary (Cyber Diplomacy) and Hanada Takahiro, Deputy Assistant Minister for Cyber Security at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Officials from various ministries, departments, and agencies of both countries participated, along with representatives from the AI industry.

During the discussions, both sides explored opportunities for collaboration across the entire AI ecosystem, focusing on co-creation, policy alignment, and the development of industry-oriented AI solutions. The MEA said that talks aimed at fostering a robust, innovative, and trustworthy AI environment in both countries.

The MEA said that key areas of cooperation included enhancing international mobility of AI professionals, promoting joint research through academic and industry exchanges, and strengthening collaboration in AI governance and policy frameworks at global platforms.

The dialogue builds on the India–Japan AI Cooperation Initiative announced during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Japan in August 2025. The initiative forms a core part of the broader India–Japan Joint Vision for the Next Decade, which seeks to deepen ties in technology, innovation, and strategic sectors.

“Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to jointly navigate the challenges and opportunities over the next decade in the field of AI, to help attain respective domestic goals, and to bring the next generation closer together,” the MEA added. They also agreed to hold the next round of the AI Strategic Dialogue in Japan at mutually convenient dates.
