The first edition of the Naval Commanders’ Conference 2026 commenced at Nau Sena Bhawan on Tuesday, bringing together senior leadership of the Indian Navy to deliberate on key operational, strategic, and technological priorities.
The conference opened with an address by Chief of the Naval Staff Dinesh K Tripathi, who lauded the Navy’s role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests, particularly in ensuring energy security amid the ongoing tensions in West Asia. He also highlighted the increased operational tempo and growing inter-service synergy.
Emphasising the need for preparedness in a rapidly evolving security environment, the Chief of the Naval Staff called for sustained focus on combat readiness and the adoption of emerging technologies to build a future-ready naval force.
He reaffirmed the Indian Navy’s commitment to maintaining a strong presence in the Indian Ocean Region and beyond, underlining the importance of a cohesive and credible approach through proactive engagement with friendly foreign countries. This includes participation in multilateral and bilateral exercises to strengthen maritime cooperation.
During the conference, discussions covered a wide range of operational and administrative issues, including jointness among the armed forces, capability enhancement both at sea and ashore, maintenance and refits, multi-domain safety practices, training, foreign cooperation, human resource management, and innovation with a focus on indigenisation.
Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) Anil Chauhan also addressed the gathering, highlighting the impact of shifting geopolitical dynamics on defence planning. He urged naval commanders to prepare for the changing nature of warfare, shaped increasingly by economic and technological factors.
The conference is expected to set the strategic direction for the Indian Navy in the coming months, aligning operational priorities with emerging global and regional security challenges.
