At least eight people were killed and several others injured after a tempo traveller carrying tourists from Kerala plunged off a hairpin bend in Valparai region in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district on Friday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Distressed to hear about the mishap in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. I extend my heartfelt condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the mishap.” He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
According to the police, the vehicle carrying a group of 13 tourists from Perinthalmanna in Kerala’s Malappuram district lost control while negotiating the 13th hairpin bend on the Pollachi–Valparai ghat road. It subsequently skidded off the road and plunged down towards a lower bend, leaving the vehicle severely mangled.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also expressed sorrow over the incident and directed authorities to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured. He assured that the state government would extend all necessary assistance to the affected families.
