Army Hospital (R&R) commissions advanced radiotherapy system to boost cancer care

Army Hospital (Research and Referral) in New Delhi has commissioned a state-of-the-art Ring Gantry-based Linear Accelerator to strengthen advanced cancer treatment services for armed forces personnel, veterans, and their dependents.

The new radiotherapy technology was formally inaugurated at the hospital’s Department of Radiation Oncology on Monday in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

According to the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the advanced Linear Accelerator will significantly improve access to modern radiotherapy and enhance the hospital’s in-house treatment capacity for a growing number of cancer patients.

The newly inducted system is capable of delivering a range of advanced radiotherapy techniques, including Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS).

Medical experts said the technology allows highly precise targeting of tumours while minimising radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissues, thereby improving treatment outcomes and patient safety.

The induction of the new equipment marks a major upgrade in oncology infrastructure within the Armed Forces Medical Services. The previous radiotherapy system at the hospital has now been decommissioned.

The MoD said that the modernisation of cancer care facilities is being undertaken across other oncology centres under AFMS in a phased manner as part of broader healthcare infrastructure upgrades.

DG AFMS Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin; Commandant, Army Hospital (R&R) Lieutenant General Avinash Das and other senior officials were also present on the occasion.
