Assam Rifles, Army conduct joint flood relief and disaster response training in Tripura, Mizoram

The Assam Rifles and the Indian Army conducted joint flood relief and disaster response training exercises in Tripura and Mizoram ahead of the monsoon season to strengthen coordination, operational preparedness and emergency response capabilities, officials said on Wednesday.

Defence spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mahendra Rawat said the two-day exercise in Tripura, held on May 19 and 20, was aimed at ensuring seamless flood relief operations during natural disasters and enhancing synergy and readiness between the two forces.

Personnel from Assam Rifles and the Indian Army participated in disaster management drills and rehearsed standard operating procedures related to rescue and relief operations.

During the exercise, troops used common drills, equipment and operational procedures to ensure uniformity in training, coordination and execution during emergencies. Officials said the exercise significantly improved interoperability between the two forces and enhanced their preparedness for coordinated disaster response operations.

The training programme also reaffirmed the commitment of the security forces to provide timely assistance to civil authorities and ensure public safety during natural calamities and emergencies.

Meanwhile, in Mizoram, Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Central Young Lai Association, conducted a four-day disaster preparedness and response training programme at Zorinpui in Lawngtlai district.

Another defence spokesperson said the initiative was aimed at strengthening disaster resilience and regional safety in Mizoram’s border areas ahead of the monsoon season.

The training programme focused on emergency response skills, including flood relief operations, firefighting techniques and specialised medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) procedures.

Officials said the collaboration between Assam Rifles and the Central Young Lai Association helped establish a coordinated framework for disaster response in border regions by combining operational expertise with community-level outreach.

Local participants and association leaders appreciated the initiative, stating that such practical training programmes are essential for protecting lives and property during natural disasters.

“The successful completion of the training programme reflected the unwavering commitment of the Assam Rifles to its ‘Sentinels of the Northeast’ ethos by promoting security, humanitarian assistance and community well-being through active partnership, preparedness and coordinated response mechanisms,” the spokesperson added.
