Assembly polls 2026: BJP breaches TMC bastion in West Bengal, heads for decisive win

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is heading towards a decisive victory in West Bengal after taking a massive lead over the Trinamool Congress (TMC), according to the latest counting trends released by the Election Commission of India.

As of 6:00 pm, the BJP won 33 seats and was leading in 172, while the TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee, won 10 seats and was ahead in 72.

Counting is under way in 293 of the 294 constituencies in West Bengal after the Election Commission ordered a re-poll in the Falta seat in South 24 Parganas district on May 21. The result for that constituency will be declared on May 24.

West Bengal recorded one of its highest-ever voter turnouts in the Assembly elections, with 93.19% polling in Phase I and 91.66% in Phase II, taking the overall turnout to 92.47%, according to the ECI.
