Centre pushes timely completion and better maintenance of highways in Punjab, Delhi and Haryana

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday reviewed the progress, quality and maintenance of National Highway projects spanning 4,335 km in Punjab and 3,332 km across Delhi and Haryana.

The review meeting, held in New Delhi, was attended by Union Ministers of State Ajay Tamta and Harsh Malhotra, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the National Highways Authority of India and project contractors.

According to the Ministry, the review was conducted based on inputs received through media and social media platforms regarding the condition and maintenance of highway stretches in the three states.

During the meeting, Gadkari stressed the need to accelerate on-ground execution of highway projects and ensure timely completion of works. He directed officials and contractors to strengthen coordination and maintain strict adherence to project timelines.

The Minister also emphasised continuous monitoring of project quality and called for the adoption of modern construction technologies and best engineering practices to improve durability and long-term performance of National Highways.

Highlighting the need for smoother and safer travel, Gadkari directed officials to improve riding quality and ensure seamless connectivity across key highway corridors in Punjab, Delhi and Haryana.

He also stressed greater accountability in maintenance operations and called for regular inspections to identify and address deficiencies in a timely manner.

With the monsoon season approaching, the Minister instructed officials to undertake advance preparedness measures across all project stretches, including effective drainage management, slope protection and quick response systems to minimise disruptions and ensure commuter safety.

Gadkari further directed agencies to remain vigilant against waterlogging, erosion and other weather-related challenges to ensure uninterrupted traffic movement during the monsoon season.
