Green Technology Partnership will connect Nordic expertise to India’s skills: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced the launch of a Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership between India and the Nordic countries, aimed at strengthening cooperation in sustainability, clean energy, advanced technologies and industrial innovation.

Addressing a joint press statement after the third India-Nordic Summit in Oslo, PM Modi said the partnership would combine the specialised expertise of Nordic nations with India’s talent and scale to develop solutions for global challenges.

“With this Green Technology Partnership, we will connect Iceland’s expertise in geothermal and fisheries, Norway’s expertise in blue economy and Arctic, and all Nordic countries’ expertise in maritime and sustainability to India’s skills to ensure a better future for the entire world,” the Prime Minister said.

He also highlighted cooperation in next-generation industrial and digital sectors, stating that Sweden’s advanced manufacturing and defence capabilities, Finland’s telecom and digital technologies, and Denmark’s cyber security and health-tech expertise would be linked with India’s growing technological ecosystem.

PM Modi arrived in Oslo on Monday after concluding his bilateral engagements in Sweden. The visit marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Norway in more than four decades.

The summit brought together leaders from the five Nordic nations, including Iceland Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir, Norway Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Sweden Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Finland Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

The India-Nordic Summit process began in Stockholm in 2018 and was followed by the second summit in Copenhagen in 2022. Officials said the current summit builds on growing cooperation between India and the Nordic region in trade, technology, climate action and innovation.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, PM Modi’s visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to India’s trade and investment ties with Nordic countries and strengthen resilient supply chains under the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement and the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA).

The summit also featured discussions on renewable energy, digital transformation, sustainable economic security and strategic cooperation across sectors.

PM Modi is currently on a five-nation tour covering the UAE, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy. Italy will be the final leg of his visit.
