Heatwave conditions are expected to persist across Delhi-NCR for the next three days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for the region on May 26 and 27. The weather office said maximum temperatures could touch 44 degrees Celsius during this period, while minimum temperatures are likely to remain between 30 and 31 degrees Celsius.
The IMD has advised residents to exercise caution, particularly during afternoon hours when heatwave conditions are expected to intensify. People have been urged to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure, remain hydrated and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
According to the forecast, the maximum temperature on May 26 is likely to reach 44 degrees Celsius, with the minimum temperature around 30 degrees Celsius. Heatwave conditions are expected throughout the day, accompanied by strong surface winds during the afternoon and evening, which could further aggravate the impact of the extreme heat.
Weather conditions on May 27 are expected to remain largely unchanged. The maximum temperature is again likely to hover around 44 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may rise slightly to 31 degrees Celsius. The IMD has also warned of strong hot winds during the day, increasing the risk of heatstroke and dehydration.
A gradual change in weather is likely to begin from May 28. The IMD has forecast a slight dip in the maximum temperature to around 43 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may rise to 32 degrees Celsius. Light rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is also expected.
The department has predicted strong gusty winds and thunderstorm activity, with wind speeds likely to range between 50 and 60 kmph during the afternoon and evening hours.
A more significant change in weather conditions is expected from May 29 onwards. The IMD has forecast a sharp fall in temperatures, with the maximum temperature likely to decline to around 36 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature expected to settle near 28 degrees Celsius.
Light rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is also likely on May 29, along with strong winds blowing at speeds of 40-50 kmph across parts of the NCR region. Weather officials said the rainfall and gusty winds are expected to bring relief from the intense heat prevailing over the region for the past several days.
The weather is likely to remain comparatively pleasant on May 30 and 31. During this period, the maximum temperature is expected to remain between 35 and 36 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may hover around 25 degrees Celsius.
The IMD has issued a “no warning” status for these days, although light rain and thunderstorms may continue at isolated places. Humidity levels are expected to fluctuate between 40 and 70 per cent.
According to weather experts, the anticipated change in weather over Delhi-NCR is primarily due to the influence of a Western Disturbance and changing atmospheric conditions. Until then, residents have been advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions against the prevailing heatwave conditions.
