Heavy rain likely in eight Tamil Nadu districts today; cloudy sky, light showers in Chennai

Heavy rain is likely in eight districts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, while Chennai is expected to witness cloudy skies and light to moderate showers, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai.

In a statement, the weather department said an atmospheric circulation extends from the central-east Bay of Bengal to the southeast Arabian Sea, passing through the southwest Bay of Bengal, the southern Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Kanyakumari sea regions. The system is expected to influence weather conditions across several parts of the state over the coming days.

Under its impact, heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in the hilly regions of Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts, as well as in Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Theni, Dindigul and Kanyakumari districts on Tuesday.

The department said intense spells of rain may occur in these areas and advised residents, particularly in vulnerable and hilly regions, to remain cautious as heavy showers could disrupt transportation and daily activities.

Officials added that moderate rainfall is likely at one or two places across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from Wednesday till May 29 as the prevailing atmospheric circulation continues to influence weather patterns.

For Chennai and adjoining areas, the forecast indicates generally cloudy skies over the next 24 hours, with moderate rain and brief spells of showers likely in parts of the city.

Despite the rainfall activity, hot and humid conditions are expected to persist in Chennai, with temperatures likely to remain on the higher side. Weather experts said the combination of heat and moisture could make daytime conditions uncomfortable even during intermittent showers.

Meteorologists noted that while districts receiving substantial rainfall may experience some relief from the heat, humid conditions are expected to continue in urban centres, including Chennai. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and may issue further advisories depending on weather developments.
