India Meteorological Department (IMD) | temperatures may touch 46 degrees | yellow alert for Delhi

IMD issues yellow alert for Delhi for next three days; temperatures may touch 46 degrees

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi for the next three days, forecasting heatwave conditions with maximum temperatures likely to range between 44 and 46 degrees Celsius.

After a brief spell of cloudy weather and relatively cooler temperatures provided temporary relief, the national capital is expected to witness another intense phase of heat this week.

According to the IMD, maximum temperatures are likely to rise by 1-2 degrees Celsius over the next 24 hours and remain elevated until May 27. A significant drop of around 6-8 degrees Celsius is expected only after that period. Minimum temperatures are also likely to increase by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next day before gradually easing towards the end of the month.

The weather department said the yellow alert will remain in effect until May 27, cautioning residents to take preventive measures against heat-related illnesses. It also forecast severe heatwave conditions at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana and Delhi between May 25 and May 27, with heatwave warnings likely to continue until May 28.

Humidity levels in Delhi stood at 37 per cent on Sunday morning, adding to discomfort amid the prevailing hot weather conditions.

Despite the intense heat, the IMD has predicted the possibility of light rainfall in some parts of the city by Sunday evening. Greater relief is expected between May 28 and May 30, when light showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds may bring down temperatures across the region.

Several states across the country are also experiencing extreme weather conditions. Red alerts have been issued in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra due to severe heatwave conditions. Orange alerts remain in place for Telangana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Karnataka.
