IMD issues ‘yellow alert’ for Delhi-NCR, forecasts thunderstorms and light rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for Delhi and adjoining NCR areas, forecasting light rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across the national capital on Tuesday.

According to the weather agency, Delhi is likely to witness “very light to light rainfall” during the day, along with thunderstorms and lightning activity.

Wind speeds are expected to range between 30-40 kmph during the forenoon and may intensify to 40-50 kmph later in the day.

The IMD said similar weather conditions are likely to persist through the evening and night. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to settle around 36 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius, respectively.

In its advisory, the IMD urged residents to remain cautious in view of the gusty winds and thunderstorm activity. People have been advised to avoid standing in open areas or taking shelter under trees and electric poles during thunderstorms.

The weather agency also warned that traffic movement could be disrupted in some parts of the city due to rain and strong winds. Farmers and those engaged in construction activities have been advised to take necessary precautions.

Meteorologists attributed the sudden change in weather conditions across the NCR to the influence of a western disturbance coupled with local meteorological activity.
