India and Cyprus have reaffirmed their commitment to the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), describing it as a transformative initiative with the potential to reshape global trade, connectivity and economic prosperity.
The discussions took place during the state visit of Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides to India.
Addressing a special media briefing in New Delhi, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs Sibi George said both countries recognised the strategic importance of IMEC in strengthening regional and international connectivity.
He said the corridor has significant potential in promoting global trade and prosperity while improving links between India, the Middle East and Europe.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both sides also reiterated their shared commitment to maintaining stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider Middle East region.
The leaders emphasised the importance of deeper engagement and stronger interconnection corridors linking India to Europe through the Middle East.
India and Cyprus also discussed the possibility of establishing a bilateral connectivity dialogue aimed at enhancing cooperation in infrastructure development, trade routes, logistics and strategic connectivity initiatives.
The discussions formed part of broader efforts by the two countries to expand cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, maritime affairs and regional connectivity.
The IMEC initiative, unveiled in 2023, consists of an Eastern Corridor connecting India to the Gulf region and a Northern Corridor linking the Gulf region to Europe. The proposed corridor includes railway links, ship-to-rail transit systems and road transport networks aimed at improving trade efficiency and regional integration.
President Nikos Christodoulides is visiting India from May 20 to 23 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit marks his first trip to India in his current role as President of Cyprus.
