India, Cyprus elevate ties to strategic partnership after talks between PM Modi-Cyprus President Christodoulides

India and Cyprus on Friday elevated their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership following wide-ranging talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides in New Delhi.

The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation across sectors including trade and investment, defence and security, maritime and financial connectivity, technology and innovation, education, culture, mobility and India-European Union engagement.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments and reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms, including cross-border terrorism.

“Building upon comprehensive and trusted partnership! Prime Minister Narendra Modi held wide-ranging discussions with President Nikos Christodoulides of Cyprus in New Delhi today,” Jaiswal said in a post on X.

The leaders also witnessed the exchange of several agreements covering counter-terrorism cooperation, maritime security, diplomatic training, innovation, education and culture.

Earlier in the day, President Nikos Christodoulides paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. Jaiswal said Gandhi’s ideals of peace and non-violence continue to inspire people around the world.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also met the visiting leader and said he valued Cyprus’ support for strengthening India-EU cooperation and bilateral ties.

President Christodoulides arrived in New Delhi on Thursday after completing the Mumbai leg of his India visit. He was accorded a ceremonial welcome and Guard of Honour and received by Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta.

According to the MEA, the visit builds on the momentum created by PM Modi’s historic visit to Cyprus in June 2025 and reflects the shared commitment of both countries to deepen strategic cooperation.

During his Mumbai visit, President Christodoulides held discussions with business leaders and highlighted opportunities for stronger cooperation in financial services, technology, innovation, shipping, connectivity and energy.

“My visit to Mumbai focused on building on the new momentum in Cyprus-India relations by increasing strategic depth through deeper business, investment and financial cooperation,” the Cyprus President said in a post on X.
