Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday held bilateral talks with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Gothenburg, with the two countries agreeing to elevate their relationship to the level of a Strategic Partnership aimed at deepening cooperation across trade, technology, security and sustainability.

Her Royal Highness Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden also participated in the meeting and conveyed greetings from Carl XVI Gustaf and Silvia. Prime Minister Modi extended his wishes to King Carl XVI Gustaf on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

During the talks, the two leaders reviewed the full spectrum of India-Sweden ties and noted growing momentum in sectors including trade and investment, innovation, green transition, emerging technologies, defence and security, digitalisation, SMEs, space, research, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties rooted in shared democratic values and driven by innovation, sustainability and research collaboration.

The leaders agreed that the new Strategic Partnership will be guided by four key pillars — Strategic Dialogue for Stability and Security; Next-Generation Economic Partnership; Emerging Technologies and Trusted Connectivity; and Shaping Tomorrow Together – People, Planet, Health and Resilience.

Additionally, the two countries adopted the India-Sweden Joint Action Plan 2026-2030, aimed at expanding collaboration across political, economic, technological, security and people-to-people sectors.

Referring to the recently concluded India-European Union Free Trade Agreement, the two Prime Ministers said the pact had opened a new phase in economic and commercial cooperation and expressed hope for its early implementation to strengthen trade, investment and technology linkages further.

PM Modi appreciated Sweden’s continued engagement with India in strategic sectors such as innovation, clean technologies, advanced manufacturing, sustainable mobility and digital transformation. Prime Minister Kristersson, meanwhile, praised India’s advances in digital transformation and artificial intelligence, while also acknowledging the contribution of the Indian community to Sweden’s economy and innovation ecosystem.

Further, the two leaders exchanged views on key regional and global developments, stressing the need for reforms in the United Nations and other multilateral organisations. Prime Minister Modi thanked Sweden for its support in the global fight against terrorism, while both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to promoting peace, stability, resilient supply chains and sustainable economic growth.
