JANANI records 1.34 crore registrations as Centre expands digital maternal healthcare push

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday launched JANANI( Journey of Antenatal, Natal and Neonatal Integrated Care), a digital maternal and child healthcare platform that seeks to bring pregnancy tracking, newborn care and related health services under a unified digital system.

Unveiled at the National Summit on Innovation and Inclusivity: Best Practices Shaping India’s Health Future, the platform has been developed as an upgraded version of the existing Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) portal, according to the ministry.

The initiative aims to provide seamless digital support across the entire spectrum of maternal and child health, enabling better coordination, data-driven decision-making, and improved service delivery at various levels of healthcare facilities.

The ministry highlighted the platform is designed to maintain longitudinal digital health records of women during their reproductive years by tracking key healthcare services across the maternal and child care continuum, including antenatal care, delivery, postnatal care, newborn care and family planning.

According to the government, the platform has so far recorded 1.34 crore beneficiary registrations, over 30 lakh registrations of pregnant women, generation of more than 30 lakh Mother and Child Health (MCH) cards, and over 1 lakh biometric verifications.

A key feature of JANANI is the introduction of QR-enabled digital MCH cards that allow portability and easier access to health records. The platform also includes automated alerts for high-risk pregnancies, due-list generation and real-time dashboards intended to improve supervisory monitoring and targeted interventions.

The Health ministry said JANANI has interoperability features that enable integration with platforms such as U-WIN and POSHAN, allowing seamless exchange of beneficiary data across programmes.

The platform allows registration through identifiers including ABHA, Aadhaar-linked OTP or biometric verification, and mobile numbers. Officials said this would help maintain continuity of care for migratory populations and reduce duplication of records.

JANANI also offers self-registration through web and mobile platforms, besides providing reminders for antenatal visits and immunisation schedules, access to nearby healthcare facility information, and nutritional guidance.

The ministry described JANANI as a structural reform in maternal and child healthcare administration, aimed at improving service delivery, accountability and long-term maternal and child health outcomes through digital integration and real-time monitoring.
