3rd India-Nordic Summit

PM Modi hails “growing depth and dynamism” of ties at 3rd India-Nordic Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday participated in the third India-Nordic Summit in Oslo, highlighting India’s growing strategic and economic engagement with Nordic nations across sectors such as sustainability, clean energy and emerging technologies.

In a post on X, PM Modi said the summit reflected the “growing depth and dynamism” of India’s partnership with the Nordic region.

“Our discussions focused on several aspects, including sustainability, innovation, clean energy, emerging technologies and strengthening cooperation for a peaceful and prosperous future,” the Prime Minister said.

The summit brought together leaders from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden to discuss ways to expand cooperation in trade, climate action, innovation and technology.

PM Modi said India and the Nordic countries are connected through shared democratic values, mutual trust and a common commitment to human-centric development.

Ahead of the summit, the Prime Minister held bilateral meetings with Iceland Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir, Finland Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

During his meeting with Frostadottir, PM Modi discussed cooperation in green technologies, carbon management, sustainable fishing and the Blue Economy.

“Iceland’s prowess in sectors relating to the Blue Economy is admirable. We are hopeful that the historic India-EFTA TEPA will give an impetus to trade and investment linkages as well,” Modi said after the meeting.

According to Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the discussions between the two leaders also covered innovation, digital technologies, the creative economy, Arctic cooperation and people-to-people ties.

In talks with Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, the leaders discussed strengthening cooperation in artificial intelligence, 5G and 6G networks, quantum technologies and the circular economy. The two sides also underlined the importance of early implementation of the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement.

PM Modi also met Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to further strengthen the India-Denmark Green Strategic Partnership, with discussions focusing on sustainability and digitalisation.

The five Nordic countries together account for a combined economic output of over USD 1.9 trillion and are considered global leaders in green transition and innovation-driven development.

PM Modi arrived in Norway from Sweden on Monday as part of his five-nation tour covering the UAE, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy from May 15 to 20. Following the summit, he will travel to Italy for the final leg of his visit.
