PM Modi pays tribute to Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tributes to former PM and Congress leader Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Tributes to former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji on his death anniversary.”

Rajiv Gandhi’s family, including Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra paid floral tributes at his memorial, Veer Bhumi, in New Delhi. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka’s children, Miraya and Raihan Vadra, were also present during the tribute ceremony.

Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan also paid floral tributes to former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary at Uprashtrapati Bhawan.

In a post on X, V-P Radhakrishnan said, “Respectful tributes to former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji on his death anniversary. Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji’s contributions to public life and his sacrifice in the service of the nation continue to be remembered with respect and gratitude.”

Senior Congress leaders including Ashok Gehlot, P. Chidambaram, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Jagdish Tytler, Mukul Wasnik and Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav also paid homage to the late leader.

Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister in October 1984 following the assassination of his mother and then PM Indira Gandhi. At the age of 40, he became the youngest Prime Minister in India’s history.

Born on August 20, 1944, Rajiv Gandhi served as Prime Minister until December 1989. He was assassinated on May 21, 1991, during an election rally in Sriperumbudur by a suicide bomber linked to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
