West Bengal: Lionel Messi statue secured with ropes after locals report swaying in wind

A statue of Argentine football legend Lionel Messi installed on VIP Road in Lake Town, Kolkata, was secured with ropes on Wednesday after local residents reported that it was swaying in strong winds, prompting authorities to inspect the structure.

Officials visited the site following the complaints to assess the stability and safety of the installation. Precautionary measures were taken to ensure the structure remained secure amid changing weather conditions and public safety concerns.

A contractor present at the site told ANI, “We came to inspect Messi’s statue after reports that it was swaying in the wind. The higher authorities will decide the next course of action.”

Authorities are continuing to monitor the structure and are evaluating whether additional reinforcements or modifications are required to ensure its long-term stability.

The development comes days after controversy surrounding Messi’s “GOAT Tour” event in Kolkata. Last week, Satadru Dutta, the main organiser of the tour, filed a complaint against former West Bengal Sports Minister Arup Biswas, alleging misconduct, including misuse of tickets for Messi’s Kolkata event and pressure regarding the issuance of access cards.

Messi’s appearance in Kolkata had earlier witnessed disorder at Salt Lake Stadium after spectators who had purchased high-priced tickets allegedly began throwing bottles and attempting to breach gates between stands following the footballer’s early departure from the venue.

Several fans also criticised the event management, alleging that VIPs and political figures monopolised access to Messi, leaving many attendees unable to see the Argentine star.

The situation escalated further when some spectators allegedly attempted to enter restricted areas and damage parts of the event setup, including tents and goalposts. Police later intervened and used mild force to disperse the crowd and restore order.

Earlier in 2025, Messi virtually inaugurated the 70-foot-tall iron statue at Lake Town, which organisers claimed was among the largest statues dedicated to the football star.

Installed by Sree Bhumi Sporting Club in South Dum Dum, Kolkata, the statue depicts Messi holding the FIFA World Cup trophy, commemorating Argentina’s triumph at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
