In a significant boost to agricultural exports from the North Eastern Region, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first export consignment of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Tezpur Litchi from Assam to Dubai.
The one-metric-tonne consignment was shipped on June 7, marking a new milestone in expanding international market access for agricultural products from the region. Tezpur Litchi is among Assam’s most well-known horticultural products and is recognised for its sweetness, bright red colour, distinctive aroma and superior quality.
Tezpur Litchi is cultivated in several popular varieties, including Bombaya, Bilati, Elaichi, Piyaji and Sahi, which are known for their distinct flavour and quality. The GI tag has helped enhance the product’s identity and market recognition, increasing its appeal among international buyers.
According to APEDA, the export reflects the growing acceptance of India’s GI-certified agricultural products in overseas markets and underlines the export potential of the North Eastern Region, which is home to a wide range of high-value agricultural commodities.
The initiative has also translated into better returns for growers. Farmers associated with the export supply chain received nearly 10 per cent higher prices than prevailing domestic market rates, despite strong local demand for the fruit.
Officials said the shipment is expected to encourage more farmers to participate in export-oriented value chains, helping improve incomes and create sustainable livelihood opportunities.
APEDA has been actively promoting agricultural exports from the North East through infrastructure development, quality certification, capacity-building programmes, export-oriented production practices and market linkage initiatives. The authority works closely with state governments, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), exporters and other stakeholders to integrate farmers into global value chains.
The successful export of Tezpur Litchi to Dubai is expected to pave the way for larger consignments in the future and further strengthen the international market presence of agricultural products from Assam and the wider North Eastern Region.
Established under the APEDA Act, 1985, APEDA functions under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and is mandated to promote exports of agricultural and processed food products through quality development, infrastructure support, capacity building and market promotion initiatives.
