Centre clears ₹1,235 crore housing project for govt employees in Amaravati

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the construction of a General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) campus in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, at a cost of ₹1,234.91 crore.

The project, the first GPRA development in Amaravati and Andhra Pradesh, will provide housing for central government employees and is aimed at reducing their financial burden while improving access to residential facilities near workplaces, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs said.

Spread across 17 acres, the campus will comprise 11 residential towers with 1,504 dwelling units ranging from Type II to Type VI categories. It will also include basement parking for 1,972 equivalent car spaces (ECS). The total built-up area of the project is 31.30 lakh sq ft, including a basement area of 9.10 lakh sq ft.

According to the ministry, the housing complex will be developed in line with green building norms and is planned to achieve a minimum GRIHA 4-Star rating. The project will comply with the latest Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code (ECSBC) 2024 and Eco-Niwas Samhita (ENS) 2024 standards, with a focus on energy efficiency, water conservation and sustainable construction practices.

The campus will feature a range of civic and community facilities, including a bank and ATM, post office, crèche, community hall with dining facilities, food court, shopping complex, service centre and guest house. It will also incorporate barrier-free infrastructure to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities.

The ministry said the project is expected to generate around 7 lakh man-days of employment annually during the construction phase and about 50,000 man-days each year during the operational phase.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs will execute the project through the Central Public Works Department (CPWD). Pre-bid activities have already begun and tender documents are currently being prepared.
